William Pirrie, 1st Viscount Pirrie

William Pirrie Was a leading Irish shipbuilder and businessman and He was funding the Titanic project.

Born in Quebec, Canada, a son to Irish parents. When he turned 2 years old he was taken to Ireland, to the city of Conlig, County Down, where he spend his childhood.

In 1912 he was to travel aboard the Titanic, but illness prevented him from joining the tragic voyage.

Thomas Andrews

Thomas Andrews, Jr was born the7 February 1873 and died on April 15 1912. He was an Irish businessman and shipbuilder. He was the managing director and head of the draughting department for the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Ireland.

"Andrews was the shipbuilder in charge of the plans for the ocean liner RMS Titanic. He was traveling on board the Titanic during its maiden voyage when it hit an iceberg on 14 April 1912 and was one of the 1,517 people lost in the disaster.

In 1907, Andrews began to oversee the plans for a new superliner, the RMS Olympic for the White Star Line. Later, he designed the plans and the interior of the Titanic.
On 14 April at 11:40 PM, the Titanic struck an iceberg on the ship’s starboard side. Andrews had been in his stateroom sleeping at the time, and barely noticed the collision. Captain Edward J. Smith had Andrews summoned to help examine the damage. Andrews determined that there was nothing that could be done and that the Titanic would sink".

Before starting the work on the Titanic, Thomas Andrews and other designers had a conversation about, " how big the three ships must be?" the answer was, " the biggest ships in the world". After the meeting Andrews started to draw the plans ( see above in the first part of the video). when he finished his work, it was clear that the ships are the biggest and the safest at that time. the Titanic's keel was laid on March 22, 1909.

The Building Ground

"Harland and Wolff was formed in 1861 by Edward James Harland (1831–1895) and Hamburg-born Gustav Wilhelm Wolff (1834–1913, in the UK from age 14). In 1858 Harland, then general manager, bought the small shipyard on Queen's Island from his employer Robert Hickson.

When Harland died in 1894, William James Pirrie became the chairman of the company until his death in 1924. Thomas Andrews also became the managing director and head of the draughting department in 1907. It was during this period that the company built the RMS Titanic and her sister-ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic between 1909 and 1914, commissioning William Arrol to construct a massive twin gantry and slipway structure for the project. These were three of over 70 ships constructed for the White Star Line by the company, the last being the RMS Britannic in 1929".

Titanic's exterior and plan was designed mostly by Thomas Andrews. In fact, when it was sinking Andrews used his plan of the ship to investigate the case. It was the first time in history that a ship of this size was designed. This mastodon of 52,310 tons had its own specifications, Length of 882 ft 9 in (269.1 m), the longest ship at that time. But, the most impressive facts about the titanic is the interior that was designed by Andrews with other artists (designers).

"In addition to taking meals in the main dining saloon, first-class passengers could make reservations in the deluxe À la Carte Restaurant located on the Bridge Deck. What had started as a small, 25-table deluxe restaurant on the Olympic had expanded into a 140 seat social club on Titanic just a year later. The addition of this exclusive and expensive dining room accidentally created a "First-Class, First-Class.”

Informed observers noted, “The introduction of the restaurant appears to be creating a new class of passenger, who assumes an air of superiority and holds aloof from the ordinary saloon diner.”

Ordinarily, meals for all classes on Titanic were included in the price of the passage and diners selected their meals from a generous, but fixed menu. However, in the À la Carte Restaurant diners could chose each course separately from a wider selection than that available in the main dining saloon. Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon, internationally known couturier, traveling with her husband, Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon, wrote of the experience, “Fancy strawberries in April, and in mid ocean. The whole thing is positively uncanny. Why, you would think you were at the Ritz.” And some passengers did indeed refer to this dining room as "The Ritz."

With this luxury came a price, literally. Passengers had to pay for their meals out of pocket just as in any restaurant on shore and were presented with a bill from a waiter's pad upon which their menu selections had been written. White Star did take £3 to £5 off the cost of the passage ticket, so long as the passenger made exclusive use of the À la Carte Restaurant; however, given the cost of the menu items, it was easy for passengers to spend an amount equal to that on "The Ritz’s” lavish meals. The room itself was decorated in the French style, Louis VI, and featured walls with delicate walnut veneers set off by gilded swags and festoons. These gilded swags were repeated in the plaster ceiling and on the boarders of the china. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead, but with a subtle difference from those on shore: these fixtures had been constructed to hang rigidly from the ceiling making the gentle sway of the Titanic less noticeable to diners.

Another new feature on Titanic was the "Café Parisien", which was adjacent to the À la Carte Restaurant. Passengers seated here could choose meals from the À la Carte menu, but in the café large picture windows afforded a view of the sea while dining--something that had never been done on a British ship before. This room also had its own distinctive china.

If the weather cooperated, the windows could be rolled down and passengers could dine al fresco - another Titanic first. On her first and only voyage, the Café Parisien proved to be particularly popular with the younger set traveling in first-class".

What inspired Thomas Andrews to design the ship and its content was a simple look at the past. The past, is that the ships did not have many luxurious atmosphere or a restaurant "a la carte". He wanted to fit into the Titanic the most he could, Turkish bath, pool, gym, and even a dog promenade deck. The Titanic was more luxurious than her own Sister, the Olympic.
